There has been many enhancements to the new version which have help many users to improve their current workflow and overcome some of the earlier limitations. I’ll be sharing/explaining some of the cool enhancements which I feel would be helpful to majority of SOLIDWORKS users.
Shorten Assembly FeatureManager Tree
In earlier versions if you’ve same components used in the assembly at various places, then locating them all in the tree was little cumbersome. One may had to group them into a folder for easy search but if another one is added to the assembly, then one needs to make sure to move that to the group folder. This is more of hassle when you need to change configuration for all them and digging them out in the large assembly is almost a nightmare. But now with SOLIDWORKS 2017, the problem has been resolved by a nice enhancement of Grouping Components.
In the FeatureManager design tree, you can automatically group the same components with the same configuration into a folder-like structure. Grouping can greatly condense the length of the FeatureManager design tree and make it easier to find components, especially in large assemblies.
In the FeatureManager design tree, right-click the top-level assembly and click Tree Display > Group Component Instances. To ungroup the components, do the same step and uncheck the Group Component Instances option. One can set this option in the assembly templates and then all the same components with the same configuration would group automatically.
I’ve also written a macro to toggle this option ON and OFF. Please download from SOLIDWORKS Macro: Toggle Group Component Instances
Here is a quick video showing Group Component Instances.
